MaryEllen Downey, age 63, of East Sandwich died August 8th, 2017.

A native of New Haven, CT, MaryEllen was a graduate of Providence College and professionally, served as the Office Manager for KalStar Realty Services in Sandwich.

MaryEllen loved the beach and Cape Cod was part of the fabric of her soul. She felt most at peace when she was walking her dog, Bandit, in Talbot's Point Conservation near her home. When the seasons changed, she carefully observed the swans nesting in the nearby cranberry marsh-even contacting animal control when she noticed that one of the swans may be in distress. She sprinkled her backyard with hummingbird feeders so she'd be surrounded with the tiny creatures' vitality. And whenever she could, she would pack up the family car and drive with her children out on to Sandy Neck beach.

MaryEllen was most happy when she was with her children, of whom she was immensely proud. She and her husband Kevin were devoted parents, often driving from one end of New England to the other to see her children's ice hockey games. She loved to cook elaborate meals and bring her family together around the dinner table with hearty food and crisp white wine. She was fueled by laughter, but could never, ever be underestimated. She was a fierce advocate for her children and never backed down when it came to their well-being. Her obvious talent as a mother continues to shine through her three children, Sean, Colin, and Molly, who have found professional success and personal happiness.

MaryEllen spent her final months waging a tough battle against a horrible disease. But she did so every day with her loving husband by her side. Her marriage to Kevin was the bedrock of her family; one built on love and partnership, which will endure in the memories of all who knew them. They were best friends who continued to make each other laugh until her final moments.

For those who would like to honor her life, a visitation will be held Saturday, August 12th, 4:00 pm at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A in Sandwich, MA with memorial service to follow at 5:00 pm.
