(IN HIS OWN WORDS)

BORN: FITCHBURG, MA, APRIL 11, 1933

EDUCATION: GRADUATED FITCHBURG HIGH SCHOOL, 1950; ONE YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT, 1951; ONE YEAR AT CURRY COLLEGE, MASSACHUSETTS, 1952; NIGHT SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA, FL, 1960-63; THREE YEARS AT BRIDGEWATER STATE COLLEGE, MASSACHUSETTS, 1976-79, RECEIVED BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION 1979.

BIOGRAPHY:
HIGH-SCHOOL - PLAYED BASEBALL, GRADES 7-9, BASKETBALL, GRADES 7-12 AND TENNIS, GRADES 10-12. IN 1950 PLAYED BASKETBALL FOR THE MORAN SQUARE DINER FOR 4 YEARS AND PLAYED AGAINST CLARE BEE'S TEAM AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. WON FIRST TROPHY AS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER.

COLLEGE - IN 1951, UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT (UCONN), FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM (RANKED #6, NEVER STARTED BUT ALL 5 STARTERS WERE JUNIORS AND SENIORS) AND RANKED NUMBER ONE (#1) PLAYER ON THE UCONN TENNIS TEAM (THERE WERE NO JUNIOR VARSITY TEAMS AT UCONN). TRANSFERRED IN 1952 TO CURRY COLLEGE (MY GRADES WERE TERRIBLE!). CURRY COLLEGE HAD CHANGED LOCATION FROM BOSTON TO MILTON, MA. THERE WAS NO TENNIS TEAM AND NO GYM. BASKETBALL HAD TO BE PRACTICED AND PLAYED IN THE HYDE PARK HIGH SCHOOL. CURRY ONLY PLAYED 12 GAMES. I PLAYED SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL AND WAS TEAM LEADER AVERAGING 18 POINTS A GAME. (MY GRADES WERE MUCH IMPROVED). WITH NO GYM AND SPARSE PRACTICES AND GAMES, I TRIED OUT ON A SEMI-PRO (NO MONEY) TEAM CALLED THE REYNOLDS CLUB FROM EVERETT. MR. REYNOLDS WAS THE MAYOR OF EVERETT. I MADE THE TEAM AND PLAYED THROUGH MAY. THEY HAD A RECORD OF 84-6, BEST TEAM IN MASSACHUSETTS. OUR BEST GAME WAS AGAINST THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS WITH MARCUS HAYNES AND GOOSE TATUM IN THE BOSTON GARDEN. OUR PLAYERS WERE FROM PROVIDENCE, DARTMOUTH, BOSTON UNIVERSITY, SUFFOLK, AND HARVARD. OUR HOME GYM FOR THE REYNOLDS CLUB WAS HARVARD MEDICAL. WE NEVER PRACTICED, PLAYED ABOUT 4 GAMES A WEEK AND TOURNAMENTS ON THE WEEKENDS AND WON MOST OF THEM.
KUTSHERS COUNTRY CLUB, NY - SENT A LETTER TO KUTSHERS COUNTRY CLUB AND WAS HIRED IN 1953 (JUNE-AUGUST) AS A BELLHOP. PLAYED BASKETBALL FOR 3 MONTHS AT KUTSHER'S COUNTRY CLUB, NY, COACHED BY BOSTON CELTICS COACH RED AUERBACH IN 1952. DID NOT KNOW AT THE TIME THAT RED AUERBACH
WAS OUR COACH. THE CELTICS DIDN'T PLAY MUCH SO RED WAS HIRED AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND KUTSHER'S BASKETBALL COACH FOR THE SUMMER. THE KUTSHERS TEAM WAS GREAT WITH RED AS COACH. WE ONLY LOST ONE GAME AGAINST A TEAM COACHED BY GENE SHUE. KUTSHER'S PLAYERS WERE FROM SYRACUSE, NY, USC, NORTH CAROLINA, LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY, NY, BRIDGEPORT, CT, DUQUESNE, PA, GEORGETOWN, WASHINGTON DC AND CURRY COLLEGE. FRANK REDDOUT AT SYRACUSE HAD SET AN NCAA RECORD WITH 35 REBOUNDS. AT KUTSHER'S PRACTICE GAME (INTRASQUAD) I SCORED 15 POINTS TO SIHUGO GREEN'S 14 POINTS.
BESIDES BASKETBALL I PLAYED TENNIS WITH RED TWICE A WEEK. RED WAS A NOVICE TENNIS PLAYER BUT HE IMPROVED WITH MY TEACHING. HE DIDN'T LIKE TO LOSE. RED NEVER BEAT ME BUT HE WAS GETTING 3 GAMES A SET. RED AUERBACH AND I PLAYED AN EXHIBITION TENNIS DOUBLES MATCH AGAINST PAULINE BETZ. BETZ WAS THE LADIES 1946 WIMBLEDON CHAMPION. WE PLAYED DOUBLE LINES AND PAULINE USED SINGLE LINES. SHE WON 6-1.

AFTER MY SUMMER AT KUTSHER'S I KNEW THE DRAFT FOR THE ARMY WAS COMING SO I PLAYED BASKETBALL FROM SEPTEMBER THROUGH NOVEMBER 1953. I PLAYED WITH THE SAME COACH FROM THE REYNOLDS CLUB ONLY THE SPONSOR WAS CHANGED TO THE HILLTOP STEAKHOUSE IN SAUGUS, MASSACHUSETTS. MOST OF THE SAME PLAYERS WERE STILL WITH US.
